Earthquakes Make Everything Look Different

Many of you have reached out to us with kind words over the last couple of days in regard to our recent disappointments in our support search. We thank you so much and appreciate your love and emotional support.

I don’t know about you, but over this last week I’ve had a hard time feeling to bad about my hardships in light of having lost everything I’ve ever known, like so many of the people in Haiti. At one point during our frustrating day last week I had the thought, Well, at least I didn’t just go through an earthquake and lose my entire family. Even though pain is relative and we should not belittle the feelings we have, a healthy dose of perspective keeps my thoughts spiritually in line, I think. Yes, I do wish I weren’t wasting hours of my day in front of a computer messing with a video, but at least I have a computer, and a house, and food, and clean drinking water, and know where my family is.

I hope you’ve been praying for the people of Haiti. And not just those little silent prayers throughout the day, but praying out loud and intentionally with your family for the people who have gone through this terrible disaster, that they receive the physical help they need as well as the spiritual help. I was encouraged last night to see how many networks and celebrities decided to use their fame and influence for 100% good by participating in the benefit telethon. And though we may be tempted to scoff at a celebrity’s “meager” $1 million donation, be careful not to judge their hearts and motives too quickly. First of all, you don’t know their hearts (and that number is just what they’ve given publicly), and secondly, How much have you given?

Katie and I still haven’t decided how we’re going to give, but we have decided that we need to. We were challenged last Sunday by a preacher out in Dimmitt, Texas who said that most of us are able to give something. Oh it might not be in your budget, but eating out certainly is. Why not just forgo eating out one time and donate that twenty plus dollars to people who haven’t had a real meal in a week and a half?

Forgive me for the rambling, but my life looks a lot different to me during times of others’ serious need. Please pray for Haiti.
